Generally, three things determine whether you must file a tax return:

Single

Filing Status 2011 Must file if gross income is at least
Under 65 $9,500
65 or older $10,750

Married Filing Jointly

Filing Status 2011 Must file if gross income is at least
Both spouses under 65 $19,000
One spouse 65 or older $20,150
Both Spouses 65 or older $21,300

If your status is Married filing separately you Must file if your gross income is at least $3,700

Head of Household

Filing Status 2011 Must file if gross income is at least
Under 65 $12,000
65 or older $13,650

Qualifying Widow

Filing Status 2011 Must file if gross income is at least
Under 65 $15,300
65 or older $16,450

Even if you do not need to file, you should file a federal income tax return to get any money back that you might be owed.
