Payments made by a state or federal government to unemployed workers. The size of the payments are based on what the person used to make. The idea was based on a required government insurance system for the unemployed. A state will only give unemployment to someone who has lived in it for at least a year. Unemployment is supposed to be temporary means of survival for someone until they get another job.
