Definition of Medicare Part B:

Unlike Part A, Medicare Part B is not covered by taxes and in order to receive coverage you must pay a premium ($96.40 is the standard charge for 2009). This premium is usually just subtracted from your social security and covers outpatient care and some doctors' services.
