Installment Method

Definition of Installment Method:

A method of recognizing a gain on the sale of property over the same period of payment. If you sell property and are paid in installment payments over the next 5 years, you can spread out the recognition of gain over those same 5 years. The amount you recognize is calculated by dividing the gain by the contract price and multiplying that percentage by the amount of each payment you receive.
