Definition of Estate:

An estate most commonly refers to all of the property and personal effects left behind when someone dies. An estate is taxable and exists until all property is distributed to its new owners. An estate can also be created if someone files bankruptcy under either Chapter 7 or 11 of the US bankruptcy code.
