Form 540A

California Individual Resident Income Tax Return (Intermediate)

Form 540A is the middle form in terms of length, shorter than Form 540 and longer than Form 540 2EZ, used to file California income tax returns. There are requirements that you need to meet to file Form 540A however these requirements are not as harsh as those for 540 2EZ. Thus this is the form to use if you didn't meet the requirements for Form 540 2EZ but did for Form 540A. You might want to use Form 540A to file your California return because it is the best of both worlds. Form 540A is longer and most through than 540 2EZ and thus allows you to claim the most adjustments, deductions, and credits. However, 540A is shorter and more simple than 540.

To see if you need file a California return see Do I Have To File. Also, if previous unknown, there are two other forms you can use to file California returns with, Form 540 and Form 540 2EZ. However these forms might not be as good for you to file with as 540A. To see if you meet these requirements to file with 540A or 540 2EZ see the Chart. If you don't meet these requirements you will need to file your return with Form 540.
